Dr. Erskine, a prominent figure of his time, chose this architectural style for its simplicity and elegance. The house underwent significant renovations in the 1840s, adopting Greek Revival-style interior trim, which added a touch of classical sophistication to its design.
The double-pile side hall floor plan, typical of Federal-style homes, features a symmetrical layout that promotes balanced proportions and spacious rooms.
Other notable architectural details include an asphalt shingle gable roof, exterior end brick chimneys, brick load-bearing walls, and 6-over-6 sash windows.
The home stands on a sturdy masonry foundation, a testament to its enduring construction.

Today, the Monroe House remains a stunning example of early 19th-century architecture, preserved and maintained with care.
