From Post Office to Peaceful Place
Originally built in 1841, the cottage, known as Post House, has undergone a stunning restoration that preserves its rich history while offering modern comfort to guests. For many years, the post office served the local community, functioning as both a postal service and the residence for the postmaster until around 1949.
Possums in the Roof, Potential in the Views
Over the decades, the charming cottage had various uses, including becoming a bachelor pad for a local. By the late 1900s, it had fallen into a state of extreme disrepair, with possums living on the roof and the structure suffering from neglect.
A Cottage with a History to Tell
When Dr. Hannah Chapman, a general practitioner, and her husband stumbled upon the property a few years ago, they saw potential in its picturesque riverside location despite its rundown condition. What they bought was an eclectic, charming cottage in desperate need of renovation.
From Eclectic to Elegant
The building lacked a bathroom, had a makeshift kitchen, and featured an outdoor long-drop toilet. Yet, the couple was captivated by its unique charm, characterized by handmade details and original features from the pre-industrial era. The couple’s vision was clear from the start: they wanted to highlight the property’s heritage while incorporating elevated modern touches to create a welcoming and stylish holiday home for themselves and their guests.
Crafting Charm with a Touch of Class
With the help of a grant from the Built Heritage Activations scheme offered by Heritage Tasmania, the couple enlisted a skilled team of professionals, including heritage architect Genevieve Lilley, builders Lawless Wagner, and draftsman Ben Valentine. The renovation, which took six months, breathed new life into the old post office, preserving its rustic appeal while updating it for contemporary use.
Vintage Vibes and Modern Comforts
One of the key figures in the design process was Sarah Andrews, creator of the renowned Captain Rest accommodation. Sarah guided Hannah through the design, sharing insights from her successful restoration projects. Together, they even travelled to France to source vintage pieces at flea markets, bringing a touch of French flair to the cottage’s interior.
The Heart of the Home: A Kitchen Reborn
The newly renovated kitchen features soft pink lime-washed walls, a sleek brass bench, and a matching splashback, all with stunning views of the surrounding gardens. The exposed original hand-cut ceiling shingles, which have endured for 184 years, contribute texture and character to the room. A cozy wood fireplace in the living room creates a warm ambiance, making the space perfect for relaxation.
A Tranquil Getaway by the River’s Flow
Post House has become a haven for those seeking a true getaway, offering a blend of history, charm, and tranquility. Hannah reflects on the restoration process, saying, “So much wisdom, skill, and love have been poured into these walls.” Visitors can now enjoy a unique experience, surrounded by the peace of the river and the beauty of the starry skies visible through the newly installed bedroom windows.
