Home’s History

The land on which Hempstead House stands was initially purchased by Howard Gould, the son of the famous railroad magnate Jay Gould, in the early 20th century. In 1906, Howard Gould commissioned the construction of the estate as a summer retreat for his family.

The mansion, designed in the Tudor Revival style, boasts 40 rooms spread over three floors. The estate originally included a polo field, extensive gardens, and several other buildings, illustrating the grandeur of the Gilded Age.

In 1917, Hempstead House underwent a significant transition when it was sold to Daniel Guggenheim, an industrialist and philanthropist. Daniel Guggenheim expanded the estate, adding new buildings and enhancing the existing structures.

The family used Hempstead House as their primary residence, hosting numerous high-profile social events and gatherings. The mansion’s opulent interiors were adorned with fine art, luxurious furnishings, and elaborate decorations.

It’s Current Status

Following Daniel Guggenheim’s death in 1930, Hempstead House saw a period of decline. The estate changed hands several times and was even considered for various developments, including a golf course and a luxury hotel.

However, none of these plans materialized, and the mansion fell into disrepair. In the 1970s, the estate faced the threat of demolition, but local preservationists and historians rallied to save it.

Today, Hempstead House is part of the Sands Point Preserve, a 216-acre park and historic site open to the public. The mansion and its grounds serve as a venue for various cultural, educational, and recreational activities.

Visitors can explore the grand interiors of the mansion, stroll through the meticulously maintained gardens, and attend special events held throughout the year. Hempstead House also plays a crucial role in the community, hosting weddings, corporate events, and charity functions.

Their efforts culminated in the acquisition of Hempstead House by the Village of Sands Point in 1979.
