“Pennsylvania needs more affordable housing. It’s that simple,” stated Senator Hughes. He urged leaders at every level of government to actively address the housing shortage, adding, “Leaders from all levels of government should be doing everything they can to address Pennsylvania’s housing shortage and finding ways to get people into homes they can afford and be proud of.”
Dire Housing Shortage
According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition, Pennsylvania currently faces a shortage of over 250,000 affordable rental units for extremely low-income residents. Alarmingly, only 38% of renters in this category have access to homes they can afford. The problem extends nationwide, with a deficit of 7.1 million affordable units for the most financially vulnerable Americans.
Local Projects Funded
This round of PHARE grants will support over 65 projects across Philadelphia and Montgomery County. Notable recipients include the SeniorLAW Center, Ardella’s House, PhillySEEDS, and Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia, among others, working to increase housing access and improve living conditions for local families.
Statewide Funding Impact
In total, the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency has awarded $73 million in PHARE grants to 387 housing initiatives across the state. This widespread investment is designed to expand affordable housing opportunities, rehabilitate existing units, and support critical services for low-income residents.
